The Lunatic - Anthony Winkler

Every once in a while I like to touch back on something classic, something that I enjoyed so much that I have to read it over and over again. So I went through my bookshelf to find summ’n and came upon my well thumbed and crease up copy of Anthony C Winkler’s The Lunatic. I started to laugh before I even opened the book!  The Lunatic by Anthony C Winkler is one of those classics that you keep… and read over and over again. As far as classic Caribbean comedy goes, The Lunatic does for me what Miguel Street by VS Naipaul also does….side splitting, laugh-out-loud-in-public humour. The Lunatic follows the life of a local madman named Aloysius who has a thousand names, none of which he can spell and his German lover…. A big boned amazon of a woman named Inga Schmidt who is very highly sexed and hilariously funny.

Now Aloysius is a happy dude, easy going, quite content living under his tree and talking to bushes and rocks and such. Enter a brash German tourist, who is slightly cookoo herself, who comes to Jamaica seeking adventure who ends up cohabiting with a madman under a tree and the end result is absolute mayhem. The thing is that as funny as Anthony Winkler’s The Lunatic is, serious issues such as racism, classism, morals and societal inequalities are dealt with or at least brought to light. The book is well written and there is a lot of dialect used throughout the book but not enough I think to confuse a foreign reader. The Jamaican identity of the characters and the landscape is nicely preserved and the use of the dialect helps to make the distinction against Inga’s German accent…which Aloysius picks up and starts to imitate by the way! Anthony Winkler’s humour is dry as dust and really funny and I promise you that a copy of this book will be an investment in humour that you will not regret, and one that you will read over and over again.
As much as I enjoy the book, the end for me felt a little abrupt, almost anti-climatic…like Anthony Winkler got a little bored and just wanted to cry “cree”. This does not detract from the story though and for me, it still gets a 2 thumbs up. After reading The Lunatic and getting a taste of that kinda read, I’d like to recommend other Anthony C Winkler books like The Painted Canoe, The Duppy and Crocodile. Crocodile in particular had me also hyperventilating, it was so funny!
Do yourself a favour and get in touch with Caribbean humour that skillfully blends social commentary in the storyline. Anthony Winkler, VS Naipaul, Samuel Selvon… You can’t go wrong! Grab something and read….. It’s the cheapest way to travel.

Ty nerobíš obyčajné fotografie, ty rozprávaš a maľuješ, dávaš do toho dušu, moment, príbeh. Ešte raz ti s celého srdca Ďakujeme.Lydka a Martin
